Youth Hostels

You will find here recent and more informations. All the prices are no longer valid (price in 1996).

If you've decided to travel all over France and won't be staying in any one place for more than a night or two, then the obvious solution is the youth hostel (auberge de jeunesse or “AJ” for short, and people who stay in them are called ajistes). There are about 300 hostels, scattered throughout the country. This is a great way to meet young people from many different countries and backgrounds. The atmosphere is friendly and you get a bed, breakfast and sometimes a meal. Many youth hostels also organise cultural and athletic activities. The youth hostels in the Paris area would be a good place to go when you first arrive in France. You have to be a member of one of the two youth hostel federations. You can buy a membership card at youth information centres (Centres d'Information Jeunesse - CIJs) or at the youth hostels, and it will cost you  about 70 Francs (- 26 years old), or 100 Francs (+ 26 years old). Depending on the hostel, an overnight stay will cost you between 55 and 90 Francs and this often includes breakfast. You can get a list of hostels from a CIJ or from the Federations at the following addresses:

27, rue Pajol
75018 Paris.
Tél : 01 44 89 87 27

38, boulevard Raspail

Accommodation Centres (Centres d'Hébergement)

These centres operate just like youth hostels, and they too accept groups or individuals who intend to stay just a few days in one place. There is a time limit, but sometimes you can stay longer, depending on available space and your proposed length of stay. Some only accept individual bookinsgs on the day of arrival. The degree of comfort in these centres can vary greatly. Some are like two-star hotels, which isn't too bad, but others provide only the bare minimum. A night will cost you about 100 Francs to 120 Francs and breakfast is frequently included in the price.

Some of these centres also have their own catering or cafeteria.

Hôtels

Small, not too expensive hotels with a nice atmosphere do exist. The trick is to find one and the way to do that is to get information from a tourist board (Office du Tourisme) or a local tourist office (Syndicat d'Initiative). Hotels are graded with from one to four stars. The cost of a room will vary according to season, the area in which the hotel is located, and the amenities available (simple washbasin, WC, shower, bath, etc.). Hotels have to display the rates in the room, including charges for any “extras” (breakfast, additional beds, etc.).

Camp Sites

Carrying your tent around in a backpack is really the cheapest way to travel. But you just can't camp anywhere you want. The law on the matter is quite specific and says that you are prohibited from camping “on public land alongside roads and public thoroughfares, along the seashore, within a radius of 200 metres from water catchments used for drinking water, and in places which are classified, registered or protected sites, and anywhere within 500 metres of a listed or protected historical monument”. Like hotels, camp sites are graded with one to four stars. During the summer season, you can find out where space is available by going to camping information centres (Centres Camping-Informations).

78, rue de Rivoli
75004 Paris.
Tél : 01 42 72 84 08
publishes a guide to camp sites which is sold in bookshops and sports shops.

A guide for camping on farms and for self-catering accommodation in the country is also available at

35, rue Godot de Mauroy
75009 Paris
Tél : 01 49 70 75 75

For all those between the ages of 13 and 18, however, the best solution is to use the Points Accueil Jeunes (PAJs). These are areas set aside for young people. You can put up your tent and use the washing facilities, and even cook there. These are good places to meet other young people. Events are also on offer and the cost is between 10 to 30 Francs per person per night. The limit is five nights. To get a list of PAJs, contact the Directions Départementales de la Jeunesse et des Sports or a youth information centre (CIJ).
